The Imperfect Family: Finding Strength and Love in the Messiness
For as long as I can remember, I chased the idea of a “perfect” family—the kind with no conflict, no criticism, no shame.
But life doesn’t come perfectly gift-wrapped.
Just this weekend, my family and I gathered, each of us carrying old guilt and secrets tucked away. Despite the silence and shadows of the past, we shared moments and kai, standing together, still loving.
It made me realise something important: the “perfect” family I imagined as a child was just that—a childhood fairytale. What we actually have is something much more authentic and resilient. It may bruise us, it may lift us, but above all, it is love.
That’s why I was drawn to restorative practices and why I committed to earning my Family Dispute Resolution certification. I deeply believe in the power of forgiveness, healing, and peace. I believe in families—especially when they’re messy, complicated, and imperfect.
If your family isn’t perfect, that’s okay.
Families are complex. Conflict, misunderstanding, and hurt are often part of the journey. But through intentional conversation and compassionate listening, healing is possible.
As a mediator, my role is to hold space for these conversations—helping families move through pain, restore relationships, and find peace together.
